We accepted the mission, even though it seemed impossible. We came up with the top 5 movie roles in Tom Cruise’s illustrious career. We walked into this exercise with our eyes wide shut, hoping our ambassador of qwan would have a need, a need for speed. But at the end of the day, we couldn’t handle the truth.
Some honorable mention candidates that just didn’t make the final cut: Joel in Risky Business, Stacee Jaxx in Rock of Ages, Lestat in Interview with a Vampire, Cole Trickle in Days of Thunder, Vincent Lauria in The Color of Money, and Brian Flanagan in Cocktail. So many more excellent choices didn’t even make the initial cut because we knew this would be so tough. Don’t let his off camera antics fool you, Tom Cruise is THE iconic actor in Hollywood.
#5 RAIN MAN – Charlie Babbitt
I mean, when Tom Cruise as Charlie Babbitt is coming in at number 5, you know you’ve got a deep body of work. As a movie, Rain Man would come in higher, but as it was Dustin Hoffman’s work that led the way, Cruise’s work in the film lands his role at 5
#4 JERRY MAGUIRE – Jerry Maguire
Make no mistake, Rain Man is a better overall film than Jerry Maguire. But Cruise’s work in Jerry Maguire outshines his performance as the bratty little brother. Really, he had us at “show me the money”
#3 A FEW GOOD MEN – Lt. DANIEL KAFFEE
An all time great level movie. Demi Moore, Jack Nicholson, Kevin Bacon, Keifer Sutherland, et al. But the star of the show undoubtedly was Tom Cruise playing the hot shot J.A.G. lawyer haunted by the ghost of his father.
#2 Top Gun – Maverick
Speaking of being haunted by the ghosts of his father. Probably Cruise’s most iconic role. The hot shot pilot sent to Miramar and Top Gun school. He lost that loving feeling, he had a need for speed, and he was truly a pioneer in international relations. I for one can not wait for the sequel expected to be released in 2020.
#1 MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – Ethan Hunt
As a child of the 80’s its difficult to not put Maverick as number one, but after 6 movies, with no end in sight, it would be foolish to not realize where Ethan Hunt stands on this list. Especially when you realize that the 6th film came out 22 years after the first, and was probably the best action film to come out in a few years. Tom Cruise make a bad movie? Now THAT would be Mission: Impossible.
